Linchfield Academy have joined an international partnership with a primary school in The Gambia, West Africa.
Founded by Joseph and Fiona Kajue in October 2009, Jofi Modern School aims to offer schooling for children from poor backgrounds. The school’s aim is to give children the best opportunities possible with education being the key to freedom, choice and social emancipation.
At the beginning of the academic year, Linchfield’s Year 3 pupils had a Zoom call with the Headteacher from Jofi Modern Mr Bah. Along with a group of Jofi Year 3 children, Mr Bah gave a tour of the school. Pupils from both schools then worked together looking at different religions around the world as part of an RE lesson. The children then asked each other about their daily school life. The Gambian children also wanted to know what the weather is like in Deeping St James, and about all the different lessons taught in school. The children loved seeing and talking to each other, enjoying learning about each other’s cultures.
During the autumn term, Linchfield pupils have been looking at stories from other cultures and sharing these with their peers at JoFi Modern. The Gambian children prepared some information about their culture (favourite local fruits/foods, music and instruments and local clothing). The teacher also dressed in a traditional African outfit which inspired our children’s short stories. The sharing of cultures helped pupils from both schools to complete writing exercises about each other.
This term, the children will be studying continents in Geography, with Linchfield looking where The Gambia is located on a world map and which continent this is located in, and Jofi Modern pupils will be locating Linchfield Academy.
